Authors have weird heads. Not physically misshapen or anything – although I’m sure some do! More like heads are used slightly differently than normal people’s heads. Authors are wired to store information. Not only the dates and times and events and responses provided details that might go unrecorded by another sense: The structure of a blade of grass, stretch the skin over the cheek bone, the sound of a suppressed thought in a sigh, the color of fruit ripening, weather on the day they first heard about 9 / 11, the weight of the cloud around the grief, the birth of a smile.

When I was a kid, it was a hardware shop in a parade of shops at the bottom of our road. It was powered by an old man named Mr. Savage, and in line with the time the store was named after him.

Savage’s had a counter somewhere in the store, but you would be hard pressed to find it. Every inch of space was filled with things.
